Climate Justice: Indigenous Rights on the Global Stage

We introduced the Guatemalan Indigenous Committee on Climate Change (GICCC), the first lobbying organization in Latin America dedicated to ensuring policy protects the rights of indigenous communities during climate change.

Indigenous Communities Bear the Brunt

Guatemala’s rich biodiversity makes it highly vulnerable to climate change. It is the Country’s 24 indigenous groups—who have coexisted with nature for centuries—who suffer the worst, exacerbating the extreme poverty they already face.

GENDER Equality

Gender Disparity:

Indigenous women are disproportionately impacted. They face increased vulnerability, having to walk further to collect essential resources and watch entire harvests destroyed by floods and drought, which also brings water-borne diseases.
